I hear the ache of your heart. I too have been muddling through a season of doubt and uncertainty for the better part of the last 18 months. I wonder what God is doing. I believe He is sovereign; I believe He is good; He is all sufficient, wise, and loving, yet, the hopes and dreams I had a year ago are distant and grainy. My heart has battled worry and anger towards the God who created and rules over the very world in which I live and breathe.
Maybe you are in a time of transition: a significant relationship in your life has recently ended, your desires of being accepted to graduate school or a dream job are unfulfilled, you are anticipating change, and you are unsure of what is next. Perhaps you are in a time of deep sorrow and loss. The effects of sin and the fallen nature of this world weigh heavily on your heart.
Sister, whatever your situation, I want you to know: God sees you. He is present with you in these times of trouble, doubt, sorrow, and uncertainty[i]. He has not left you. His presence may seem far, yet He is the friend who sticks closer than any other[ii].
God made an eternal covenant with you at the cross. He promised to never leave you, forsake you, or turn away from you[iii]. Upon faith in the work of Christ, He gave to you the very nature of Himself that dwells within us—the Holy Spirit, the faithful Comforter, Guide, and Revealer of truth to your heart[iv]. This Spirit prays for you, according to the will of God, in groanings too deep for words[v].
When your heart doubts God’s promise to you, when you feel alone, insignificant and forgotten, know this: the very God who leads you through abundant blessing and sustenance is with you in the valley of darkness. Goodness and mercy follow you all the days of your life, and you will dwell with Christ in heaven forever[vi].
When you feel alone, dejected, and hopeless, know that the God who created you loves you. The love He has for you is unmatched, relentless, faithful, and unlike any human love our world displays. Nothing can separate you from this deep and eternal love[vii].
When your heart is prone to fear, uncertainty and sadness, run to the God who is your Refuge and Rock[viii]. Jesus is unchanging[ix], unwavering, firm and sovereign. The suffering we experience in this world is temporary[x], and as we eagerly await freedom from the brokenness in the fulfillment of Christ’s return, we trust that God has given to us all that we need to live lives of godliness[xi].
Take heart, dear sister. You are loved. Cast your cares, worries and anxieties at the feet of the One who cares for you.[xii] God sees you. He is near.
Love in Christ,
